Upcycling!

after shot

I don’t know why this is, and I know I’m not alone judging by how we are all furnishing our houses these days, but I am ALL ABOUT THE UPCYCLING. I have always loved resurrecting things but having two babies put paid to pretty much any activity outside of childcare for the last four years. However, my eldest, Hunter, has just started school and my daughter, Autumn, will be at nursery three days a week in the new year and I can start to think about being creative again. When I moved to Leigh on Sea, I was amazed by the wealth of amazing charity and second-hand furniture shops there are here and I’m itching to start chucking chalk paint at everything!

I found a beautiful, but slightly dated hallway table for £20 in a local charity shop a few months ago and knew I could give it a new lease of life. It was my first ever painting project (hopefully by no means the last) and I somehow managed to squeeze in the work around the children: a hot, sunny day, a paddling pool and lots of other distractions meant I could crack on.

To be honest, I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I had a google around and got some ideas from the Interweb.

before shotI sanded it down, gave it a good wash with some sugar soap and then gave it two coats of Rustoleum chalk paint (insert colour here) before tackling it with my sandpaper.

The best tip I’ve read about distressing is to imagine where the furniture would naturally wear: corners, edges and detail for instance. I think I did OK although obviously, there’s a lot more to learn and I’d really like to learn it all!

I finished it off with a coat of clear wax and immediately installed it in our hall. I’m quite chuffed with it actually:-).

My husband and I recently inherited a lot of beautiful but quite dated wood furniture so I’ve got plenty of new projects to be getting on with now too!

I shall, of course, be blogging about my journey in RELOVED furniture right here.
